The Shrine's History
Two and a half centuries of faith — from migrant farming families to the site of India's first recorded apparition of the Infant Jesus.
Origins · 1750s–1854
A village named for a poet
Over 250 years ago, in the early 1750s, forefathers of the present Catholic community migrated from the northern banks of the Cauvery delta to the Dindigul valley, driven by repeated natural calamities. After some years at Silukkuvarpatti, these farming families settled at Kavirayapuram for its fertile land and better livelihood.
In the 18th century the village fell under the Nilakkottai Zamindari of the Nayakkar dynasty, ruled by Koolappa Nayakkar. The Tamil poet Subratubak Kavirayar — who taught Tamil to Fr. Constantine Joseph Beschi (Veeramamunivar), the celebrated missionary of the old Madurai Mission — lived and served in the Zamindar’s court here. In his honour, the village came to be known as Kavirayapuram.

Faith under trial
The early Christians of the village lost lives, livestock, homes and property to protect their faith. The apparition of the Infant Jesus that later occurred here is regarded as a divine reward for the sacrifices of these forefathers.

The full account
In 1979, Mr. Soundararajan, a retired teacher of Kavirayapuram, suffered a severe spinal injury and had been chronically ill for about three years, with all available medical treatment proving futile.
On the night the statue of the Infant Jesus was ceremonially brought to the village — amid a rare, torrential downpour taken as a sign of coming blessing — Mr. Soundararajan experienced both an apparition (darshan) and a miraculous healing. By his own testimony, the Infant Jesus appeared to him in a luminous white radiance, blessed him, and bade him rise and walk. He stood and walked without help or pain, and went from house to house announcing the miracle.
Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. Justin Diraviam of Madurai examined the reports and, after prayerful discernment, approved the reported apparition and the healings that followed. The then parish priest also reported a related vision of a statue of the Infant Jesus being lowered by angels.
Countless further healings and favours — the gift of children, health, successful marriages, education, employment, relief from debt — have been recorded at the shrine since, in the testimony of devotees.

The Novena born at Kavirayapuram
The Tamil-language Novena to the Miraculous Infant Jesus was first composed and prayed here, and has since been adopted by Tamil-speaking Catholic communities worldwide. While Thursday is the universal day of the Infant Jesus devotion, Fridays hold special significance at Kavirayapuram because the apparition itself occurred on a Friday — First Fridays in particular draw thousands for the special Novena. A convent, school and dispensary were later established on adjoining land to serve pilgrims and the local faithful.
